Moving in starts with 4 steps
If you’re new to aged care then the system can feel confusing. Here’s a simple, easy-to-follow guide.
Arrange a free, local assessment.
Start by visiting myagedcare.gov.au or calling 1800 200 422.This is where you arrange a visit by a local Aged Care Assessment Team. They will assess your specific needs and, once approved, you or your loved one will be able to enter an aged care home.
Check for financial assistance
If you’re receiving an aged pension, Centrelink may cover some of your fees at For Purpose. However, they will need to do an assessment of your assets and income. There’s a slightly different step, depending on your financial situation.
HOMEOWNERS
> Go to servicesaustralia.gov.au
> Search for and complete “Form SA485”
SELF-FUNDED RETIREES
> Go to servicesaustralia.gov.au
> Search for and complete “Form SA457”
EVERYONE ELSE
> Call 1800 227 475
> Ask for a financial assessment
It’s important to provide this information as soon as possible or you may pay too much.
Understand your costs
The fees for aged care will vary with individual needs in different homes. However, there are four standard fee types it helps to understand.
BASIC DAILY FEE
This covers your living costs like meals, power and laundry – this is set at 85% of the single basic aged pension. Importantly, if you’re a Government supported resident, this is your only fee.
ACCOMMODATION COST
This is for your room. You may have some or all of this paid by the Commonwealth Government or you may have to pay this yourself – based on Centrelink’s assessment (see Step 2).
MEANS-TESTED CARE FEE
This is an additional contribution towards the cost of care you may be required to pay – based on Centrelink assessment (see Step 2).
ADDITIONAL OR EXTRA SERVICE FEES
For Purpose Aged Care do not charge these extra fees but you may see these from other providers – they cover lifestyle or hotel-type services at the home.
If you’d like more detail on fees and charges, just ask our dedicated Client Services Team during your tour.
Tour your preferred home
Call 1300 1300 13 to book a convenient time for a tour, then make sure you take your Aged Care Assessment (see Step 1).
Once there you can:
> Discuss the specific needs of your loved one
> Understand the care provided – including lifestyle activities and meal options
> See the aesthetics of the home – including room types.
If you’re happy this is the right place for you, simply complete a Resident Agreement. You’ll then be given a copy of “The Charter of Aged Care Rights.”
